1983 White Westinghouse stackable washer won’t agitate?

Washer will fill and spin and drain but not agitate (just sits full of water) and no it is NOT over-loaded. After owning washer/dryer set for 24 years I can live with the fact that the washer light bulb JUST burned out 2 years ago. Hubby & I have 4 sons, so Yes, I have used the washer/dryer every week for 24 years. Could this be a broken belt or a problem with the cycle switch(rotating selection wheel on the front of the machine) Any guidence will help me before I put a screwdriver in my hands to take the sucker apart. Thank you.

It could just be a belt but it sounds like the transmission is broken. Does it make any sound at all… even a slight hum when its supposed to be agitating? If it’s absolutely silent your cycle switch idea is very possible.
