how to remove agitator from kenmore washer model# 83-232100?
I’m Canadian and not familiar with the American Model numbers but the machines are all the same. Paul is right about the the agitator cap if it is an older machine (ie. belt driven) The cap is tight and is difficult to take off by yourself, however, if you fill the machine on low setting and then let it agitate, you can use the machines power to your advantage. When the machine agitates counter clockwise, put your hands around the cap and when it goes to clockwise, tighten your hands on the cap and let the machine “turn” the agitator cap for you. Release the cap as soon as it starts to go counter clock wise then grab it again when it goes clockwise. Once the cap is off, chances are the bolt (9/16″ wrench) will be left for you to remove. If its been awhile, take your time so you don’t twist it off, otherwise you will be drilling out the bolt. If the machine is a newer style (direct drive) you have to take the top cap off which can either be a pop off (with a screw driver) or there may be a lock ring that you have to push down to release the softener dispenser. Then there should be a little plastic cap with a handle on the inside that you pull out. Under that is a 7/16″ bolt that you remove and the whole agitator can then be lifted out as a unit. As I say, I’m not familiar with the American models so I’m unsure as to which type. Hope that helps
