small engine experts: what engines will work for a toro walk behind mower?

I have a toro proline walk behind mower with a 11hp briggs engine. The engine is getting pretty tired and want to upgrade it to a bigger (more HP) engine. Possibly even a better kawasaki or kohler engine. What do i need to look for to make sure it will bolt up? specifics would be greatly appreciated

Almost all small engines are made in China these days. That includes well known names like Kawasaki, Honda, an Yamaha to name a few. The Japanese manufacturers moved to China in mass about 6 yrs. ago because the labor is a fraction of what it cost in Japan.

Most American small engines are now also made in China. Look on the new Toro’s and you will see the place of manufacture is China.

China does not recognize trademarks or patents, they clone the engines and sell them for a fraction of the price. You can pick up a clone for a couple of hundred dollars. For a few dollars more, you can get a clone with a 12v. starter that operates off of a motorcycle battery.

Start by measuring the bolt pattern that holds the engine to the frame. Then measure the diameter of the pulley shaft and note if the shaft is keyed or pinned on the shaft.

That is about all you need to check. You will have to adapt the throttle linkage to any new engine, including a new BS, due to changes made since your machine was manufactured.

If you go to the Briggs and Stratton web site, they have a page that describes which engines are interchangeable. They include Kohler and Honda in their interchange engines.
