Why are hybrid cars so complicated?
Diesel electric trains have been around for almost one hundred years. Hugely reliable, and cheap to operate and maintain. So why are hybrid cars so complicated? Wouldn’t it be easier to just plug an electric motor straight into the transmission with a five horse Briggs and Stratton engine supplying electricity?
one horsepower equals 746 watts.
5 horsepower equals 3730 watts.
If you add a coil, like in any old fashioned ignition system, you can triple the wattage.
Think it through before you pop off with your little smart a$$ comment bubba.
Actually, some hybrid cars are mechanically VERY simple.
The hybrids made by Ford, Toyota, Nissan and Lexus all use the Power Split Device drivetrain, which has just one single planetary gearset. No gear-shifting wear-and-tear, no clutch, no hot-running torque converter, no CVT belts. How the Power Split Device system works: http://www.eahart.com/prius/psd
The electric motor/generators in the PSD system also acts as an engine starter and alternators, so it simplifies things even further– No starter motor/solenoid or alternator to wear out and need replacement.
And since the PSD system relies more on electronic control, the engine in the PSD system has no timing belt either.
The PSD transmission in the Prius has all of 22 moving parts. That’s compared to 100+ in a normal car with a 4-speed automatic transmission with a torque converter.
That is why these Power Split Device-equipped hybrid cars actually need LESS maintenance than regular cars and have far less potential failure points in their drivetrains.
The other hybrids from GM and Honda are a lot more complicated because they use regular-car drivetrains.
