Citibank cut the reward rate on the Dividend Platinum select card from 5% to 2%, what is a good switch?
Anyone else get this letter? Its bogus, they drop the rate by more than half and offer nothing in return. Are there any good credit cards that offer 5% cash back on groceries and gas?
The Amex Blue Cash does not give 5% back on everything. It gives 1% on supermarkets, gas and drugstores and 0.5% on everything else until you spend $6500 in a year. After that you get 5% on supermarkets, gas and drugstores and 1.5% on everything else. For people who spend a lot on credit cards, it can be a good choice. Most people would do better with a different card.
Since you are interested in a rewards credit card, you should check out a site that lets you plug in how much you spend on different categories, then tells you which rewards card is the best deal based on your specific spending. It’s at http://www.creditcardtuneup.com/ . It will even tell you how to use a combination of two or three different cards to maximize your rewards, since some cards (like Discover) have a yearly limit on the cash back you can earn.
One card that comes to mind is the Chase Freedom with which has a generous cash back program by today’s standards. No card today is as good as the Citibank Dividend Platinum used to be. I have one myself and was sorry to see them knock down the rewards level to 2% on groceries, gas and drugstores.
