How difficult is it to replace a ring and pinion gear set in a rear end?
I have a 1989 mustang that has a 1987 thunderbird turbo coupe engine and the tranny was swapped from auto to manual. The rear end has 3:73 gear ratio and I want to step it down to a 3:45. I have good mechanical skills though I am more of a shade tree mechanic. I was just wondering how difficult it was for you to replace the ring and pinion and do you have any tips?
The rear is a 7.5″.
Pretty straight forward for someone with mechanical ability – get a book (Haynes or Chilton manual) to get the correct torque values, bearing clearances, etc, and a good set of feeler gauges and a torque wrench.
