Kenmore refrigerator, freezer keeps iceing over the drain hole?

model 9658184 . this refrigerator is 12 years old. Drain hole get covered with ice and then water drips into the fridge. I shut it off till ice melts and drain is open and everything is fine for about a month. Then its the same thing again.
No chance that the ice trays spilled. none in there.
model 106 9658184 serial number ef2912006 and its one with the freezer on top
There is a metal pan under the coil in the back of the freezer

First, you are missing the first three digits of the model number and that designates the manufacturer. Those digits are printed on the label and it will be likely “106.” “363.” or “253″. Without that I need to know if it is top freezer or side by side.

In any sense you are doing most of the job. But for some models there is a trap in the drain line and it is likely the drain is draining too slow allowing freezing.

After I thaw it I take a turkey baster full of warm water and stick in the drain hole and squeezing and releasing the bulb acts like a plunger running water up and down the drain line cleaning it. Don’t do it so hard you blow the drain hose loose in back or you will have a leak.

That usually takes care of it.

If it doesn’t, addressing it further gets a little more complicated. There are “cheats” for types with metal heaters (not glass tube ones) and a metal drain pan in the freezer you can hang a wire off the element and have it hang down near the drain to warm the water to prevent freezing. (called a heat probe). But you can’t use that on ones without a metal pan or it might melt the plastic liner.

And it can be more complicated from there.

There are reasons repairmen get paid well, it is because they know “stuff”. Like in some cases where this happens I noticed the metal element has warped from heating so the middle is bowed up to where it is against the coils causing the defrost to turn off early. Sometimes straightening that out so it is very *slightly* bowed down in the middle, instead of up, makes it defrosts better.
