HOUSEHOLD MAINTENANCE

1/4″ tube running from the inlet valve on my water heater to the floor drain. Water started coming out. Ideas?

I have no idea what this piece of tubing’s purpose is. It’s always been there running from right below the inlet valve on the water heater on to the floor where the drain is and no water has ever come out before. Then all of a sudden a steady stream of water started coming out. I’m not sure what to do about it and I really can’t afford to pay somebody to look at it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -Nick-

Been doing this for 35 years, never heard of, or seen such a setup. This has to have been done by a previous owner for a feed line for some other fixture, like an ice maker. When you say it’s on the inlet side, just below the valve, we’re all assuming it’s the cold side, which is where it would have to be if it’s for a feed for some other fixture. It pretty much has to have it’s own valve or water would have been coming out all along. Possilbly the valve controlling the flow broke, allowing water to move thru. Whatever it’s for I’d remove it before it costs you a fair size chunk of money, either in gallons of water used, if your’e on a city’s service, or just electricity to run your home’s pump. Doesn’t make sense to just run water down the drain for no reason. And speaking of affordability, you’re going to pay one way or another, either in higher water or electric bills or a service call for some plumber to come fix this mess.
