what light is best to promote plant growth but not algae?
I have a hood that can hold two of those fluorescent tube/rod-like lights. I’ve seen various ones for various purposes in various colors (Sun-glo, Algae-b-gone, ocean blue, etc.) What combination of two lights would be best in a tank that has a LOT of plants, but I don’t want any algae?

The K is important. you definitely want to stay between 4000 and 7000K most aquascapers use 6400k bulbs.
What you need to look at is wattage. Low light is about .5-1.5 wpg (watts per gallon) moderate light is 2-3.5 wpg and high light is anything 4 and above.
Do you have CO2 injection? If you do, you may need slightly more light to accelerate photosynthesis. I would still stick with 2-3wpg, you may struggle with algae having any more light than that.
Keep you light on a timer. This ensures that they get the right amount of light everyday (8-10 hrs) without you having to worry about it and not too much light that algae will bloom.
