How do I stop my insurance company from totaling my truck? What are my rights?
My insurance company is trying to use after market parts on my truck instead of new genuine factory Toyota parts. Can I be forced to accept used after market parts, being told that this request may cause my truck to be totaled.
The choice is left to the company and it is stated in the policy. They will pay based on available used or aftermarket parts. If you want brand new OEM parts you can pay the difference but the standard policy won’t pay for it. Let’s say your truck is 5 yrs old then the policy owes you for 5 yr old parts.
Just to be clear there is a big difference between used and aftermarket. Some folks use the words incorrectly.
Used=a recycled OEM part off a salvage vehicle. This part is manufactured by the car company.
Aftermarket=a new part that is not made by the vehicles manufacturer. Some of these parts suck, some are good.
I have used both aftermarket and used parts on my own and my kid’s vehicles. I prefer used OEM parts but have good luck with aftermarket parts, especially bumper covers.
You should make sure it is clear whether your company plans to use used OEM or new aftermarket parts. The body shop will make sure that any used OEM parts are in good condition before they put them on your truck.
