Does front load washers need special detergent or is that just a myth?

I have had a front load washer for four years and have never used special detergent and have had no issues, but my Mom just bought a front load and they said that she needed to buy “special” detergent. Is there any truth in that?

Although most newer front loaders suggest to use only “HE” high efficiency detergent, I believe that if one uses less of the regular detergent one can get similar result.

“HE” detergent is low sudsing and will help your machine perform better, but I still think if one can control themselves, using less of a regular detergent will prolly work. I use regular detergent when I go to the laundromat to use their front loaders and have never had an issue with too many suds.
